Deliveroo Rider Forum: Report of the 05/07/2022 meeting

On July 5, 2022, the Deliveroo Rider Forum representatives were able to participate in the last meeting of this first edition of the Deliveroo Rider Forum in Belgium. Other elections will be organized in the near future to allow other riders in Belgium to become representatives.

The riders who live in Brussels were invited to the Deliveroo offices and the riders who live outside Brussels were joined by Deliveroo colleagues to make a video call together.

The objective of this last meeting was to close the topics that the riders had previously discussed and to collect the riders' impressions about the 3 meetings of this first edition of the Deliveroo Rider Forum. This feedback from the riders will help the Deliveroo team to improve the content of the next meetings that will be held with the future elected representatives.

We started the meeting with a detailed explanation about riders who ride with a car to deliver the orders. This is allowed but these riders must have a goods transport license if the empty load of the vehicle is more than 500 kilos as explained here

The team then explained the actions put in place regarding identity verification of riders via the Rider app (here is an example), to ensure that all people riding with Deliveroo meet all the required conditions.

We also had the pleasure of presenting in detail to the representatives the Better Together campaign (the campaign that brings riders and restaurants together) as well as the recent legal evolutions.

Etienne, the rider representative of Liege, explained that according to him and the other riders of Liege, there could be more orders for riders during the summer. Our team explained that we have quotas of riders per city according to the demand of Deliveroo's customers and that we do not onboard more riders than these quotas. For example, in Liege, there have been no new riders for several months to allow the current riders to make the most of their time on the road. However, with the summer vacations, many families go abroad and this may be the cause of a slight decrease in orders, as well as the current economic situation.

Etienne also pointed out that there could be more marketing campaigns in Liege to compensate for this decrease in orders.

Another question was asked about the 'cash out' option, i.e. being able to transfer the income from the app immediately to one's bank account. This option is currently not available. Indeed, it makes the billing system very complex and therefore makes it more difficult for riders to calculate their income.

One of the riders also asked how the Deliveroo service could be further improved. For example, this rider often orders from Deliveroo for his family and has had to deal with some rude riders. As a reminder, the riders who ride with Deliveroo ride under the P2P and self-employed status. We invite riders, restaurants and customers to give us feedback on their bad experiences. It is thanks to this feedback that we can improve the service we provide.

To conclude, we discussed together the future of the Deliveroo Rider Forum. The riders who were representatives during the first edition gave their feedback for the next edition of the Forum:

  • They are often contacted by riders from their city in order to pass on information about what is happening on the ground on a daily basis to the Deliveroo team.
  • The riders would like to meet more often in person, it was a pity that sometimes there were several absentees. Everyone agrees that active participation by everyone strengthens the discussions
  • In general, all the representatives were satisfied with the meetings and interactions with Deliveroo because the team was very available to answer questions transparently.
